All schools in the Trust have been using the free version of G-Suite for Education thus far. However, it is possible to upgrade certain users (eg teachers) to the Enterprise edition of the platform, at a cost of £42/year per user, and we think (still tbc) that it's possible to sign up for just a 3 month period too, which might keep the costs down to a reasonable level. The trial period is max 2 weeks only, please note.
Why Upgrade? So far I've identified these reasons:
Ability to host Meets for more than 100 at a time
Google Meets feature: use of POLLS, Q&A, and BREAKAWAY ROOMS (see videos below). These are awesome features, fully integrated in Meet so not needing any 3rd party applications
Be sure to encourage pupils to use the To-Do section in Classroom to manage their assignments. It's so easily missed, and yet so useful!
They should also be shown the tags on each classroom (see pink arrow in screenshot) on the main Classroom home page. Great shortcut to see work done, assigned or missing.
This is a common problem encountered by staff, but is easy to solve - just view the slides shown right
Unsubscribing from a calendar doesn't stop it from working, so if you're not using Calendars in Classroom, we suggest unsubscribing from all of them - it's very easy!
Common problem - how can I ensure pupils are paying attention when I'm sharing my screen.
Solutions:
Log into same Meet using another device (eg phone/ipad etc) Not ideal on phone as small screen but still possible
Get a 2nd screen monitor and "extend" the desktop
Have two separate tabs open at same time and flick back and forth between them
Parents/Guardians can opt in to receive daily/weekly email summaries of their children's work. This needs to be enabled by your admin.
Summaries include:
Missing work—Work that’s late when the email was sent
Upcoming work—Work that’s due today and tomorrow
Class activity—Announcements, assignments etc
For more info and to view examples, click here
Each school must decide whether to enable this for parents
Thanks to Katie Wells of Chandlings for sharing the above! Well worth a look for those wanting to make the most of all that Classroom can offer. Either click on the image above or follow the link here
Students can easily send in any work done by hand (maths working, artwork, Mandarin, Greek writing etc), all within Google Classroom
No need for printing or emailing of work
Simply use the free Google Classroom App on any smartphone
The first video is made for staff, the second for pupils. Feel free to share!
For when you want to break the class up into separate discussion groups online, and supervise all groups as a teacher
Not for the faint hearted, but good to know it's possible! Thanks to Katie Wells for sharing
Really simple! Not even an app, it's the digital equivalent of children holding up whiteboards with their drawings/scribbles written on for the teacher to see.
No need for pupils to sign up for an account - teachers just post the link to join the Whiteboard into Classroom
Get started at whiteboard.fi, and share with your class!
This is easy to do - just make a copy of this Google Drawings template, design your perfect Classroom banner and then upload it to replace the default theme in Google Classroom.
You can't control everything, as Google will sometimes have to adjust colours so that the Title text is clearly visible, please note
Great means for getting feedback, questions etc from students watching a Google Slides presentation.
Questions submitted can then be upvoted so that you answer the most relevant questions at the end of the presentation
Perfect for students who are shy to stick their hand up, or for large scale presentations to parents where they have the chance to participate without interrupting the flow
Key features:
Replaces the interactive board with an app on your screen
Perfect for collaboration, brainstorming & organising ideas
Insert a jam in Classroom, give edit access and watch the children collaborating together on screen
Go to jamboard.google.com to get started.
Accessible on phones, tablets, laptops & desktops
Ideal for remote teaching
Use for lesson starters / plenaries
Android version has autodraw & handwriting recognition
It's now possible to create a Quiz as an assignment in Classroom, without having to make the form separately in Google Drive and inserting it
Also possible to add a grade-scheme so that the Quiz can mark itself automatically - great for quick end of topic quizzes etc
You can even use LOCKED mode so that while doing the quiz, students cannot leave the quiz or go looking for answers elsewhere [only works on Chromebooks, please note]
Great fun ideas. Check them out here:
